Visual design

Interface design, design systems and brand identity that hold together across web, mobile and print, delivered as files your team can keep using.

What it is

Visual design is everything a person sees: the interface of a product, the identity of a company, and the pages, decks and posts that carry that identity into the world. Done well it is mostly invisible; the product simply feels considered and the brand feels like one thing.

We design interfaces for the products we build and for products built by others. We create brand identities for new companies and refresh identities that have drifted. And we build design systems, the shared tokens and components that stop every new screen from being designed from scratch.

What you get

  • Interface design for web and mobile products, screen by screen, including the empty, loading and error states that are usually forgotten.
  • A design system: colour, type, spacing and component rules in Figma, and the same tokens in code where we build the product.
  • Brand identity: logo, wordmark, type and colour, with guidelines that show correct use and the common mistakes.
  • Marketing assets: landing pages, social templates, pitch decks and print, in the formats you need.
  • Accessibility built in: colour contrast, type sizes and touch targets checked against WCAG 2.2 AA.

How we work

Every engagement starts with a brief: what the design has to do, who it is for, what it must never look like, and what already exists. For a product we also want the UX work finished or under way, because visual design on an undecided structure is wasted effort.

We present two or three distinct directions, each argued for and against, and recommend one. Once chosen, the direction is applied to real screens with your actual headlines and data rather than filler text, because a design that only works with perfect content does not work.

Revisions happen in scheduled rounds rather than an open-ended stream, and every round ends with a decision. Delivery means source files, exports and a system that someone else can extend without us.

Who it is for

  • Startups that need a credible identity and a first product interface, quickly and without a bloated process.
  • Product teams with engineers but no designer, who need a system they can build against.
  • Established companies whose brand and product have drifted apart and need bringing back into line.

For campaigns and the pages that support them, see marketing.

Process

How it runs

  1. Brief

What the design has to do, for whom, what already exists, and what it must never look like.

  2. Directions

Two or three distinct directions, each argued for and against, with a recommendation.

  3. Refine

The chosen direction applied to real screens with your real content, revised in scheduled rounds.

  4. Deliver

Source files, exports and a system that someone else can extend without us.
